Food prices increase 2% in January 2010

Food prices increased 2% in January 2010, following decreases of 0.3% for both December and November 2009. This rise follows five consecutive monthly falls in the food price index. Prices have returned to levels last seen in September 2009.

In January 2010, significant increases were recorded for dry goods (up 2%), fruit and vegetables (up 5%) and meat, poultry, and fish (up 3%). Non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 2%.
The most significant individual increases came from higher prices for chicken (up 8%), fresh milk (up%), tomatoes (up 22%), and soft drinks (up 2%).

The most significant decreases came from lower prices for lettuce (down 17%) and nectarines (down 23%).
